SHINE Winnipeg
The program hosted 15 girls ranging in age from 21-13 providing a unique opportunity for the team to learn about how to best serve this wide demographic. The participants shared stories about understanding their worth outside of their appearance or their ability to provide children. For many girls in this community, their value is found in their ability to produce children, once they have done that they are often left to raise the child on their own. In addition, these young women often start having children around the age of 15 making it harder for them to independently raise the children on their own. Reminding them that their worth isn’t only found in their appearance or their children was amazing. In one session, a few of the girls were crying thinking about this idea.
At the end of the program, we were able to give the girls hand painted denim jackets from Together The Label, an organization in Toronto that employs innercity youth to paint jackets!
Altogether it was an amazing trip! We are glad to have been able to travel to Winnipeg and share with these beautiful young women! We look forward to going back!!
